Neral is primarily isolated from citrus plants (lemongrass, lemon myrtle) and Litsea cubeba oil via Steam Distillation & Fractionation:
Plant material (e.g., lemongrass leaves) undergoes steam distillation.
The condensate (citral-rich oil) is fractionally distilled between 110–125°C to separate neral (boiling point ~110–115°C) from geranial (~120–125°C).
