Essential oils are aromatic active ingredients extracted from plants. They are highly concentrated and offer a variety of benefits. They require proper use to maximize their effectiveness and avoid irritation. The following are common usage methods and precautions:
1. Aromatherapy Inhalation (suitable for regulating mood and purifying the air)
Breathing in essential oil molecules into the body is ideal for relaxation, invigoration, or relief of respiratory discomfort.
Aromatherapy Diffuser/Humidifier: Add 100-150ml of water to the diffuser and add 3-5 drops of essential oil (single or blended). Turn on the diffuser and allow the essential oil to diffuse through the mist. Common combinations: Lavender for sleep, Lemon for invigoration, and Tea Tree for air purification.
Aromatherapy Stones/Scented Wood: Add 2-3 drops of essential oil to a diffuser and place it in your room or on your desk. The oil will slowly evaporate, providing a long-lasting fragrance (ideal for smaller spaces). Hot Water Steaming: Pour 2-3 drops of essential oil into a basin of hot water. Cover your head with a towel and breathe deeply for 5-10 minutes while standing about 30cm from the water. (Be careful to avoid burns; use with caution for those with sensitive skin.)
Second, Skin Care Method (suitable for moisturizing, soothing, and improving skin texture; requires dilution)
Direct contact with skin can cause irritation, so dilute with a carrier oil. (Extra caution is advised for those with sensitive skin or pregnant women.)
Massage Absorption:
Dilute the essential oil with a carrier oil (such as sweet almond oil, jojoba oil, or olive oil). The typical ratio is: 10ml of carrier oil to 3-5 drops of essential oil for adults (for sensitive skin or children, use a lower concentration: 10ml of carrier oil to 1-2 drops).
You can massage the face (avoiding the eye area) or body. For example, lavender essential oil mixed with a carrier oil can soothe the skin, while rose essential oil is suitable for moisturizing and anti-aging. Add to Skincare:
Add 1-2 drops of essential oil to your cream, lotion, or serum (use the appropriate amount at a time to avoid mixing the entire bottle, which can spoil it). Stir well before applying to enhance your skincare benefits (a skin sensitivity test is recommended).
3. Bath/Foot Soak (Great for Relaxation and Circulation Improvement)
Bath: Fill a bath with warm water and add 5-8 drops of essential oil (you can mix with 10ml of milk or bath salts to emulsify the oil to prevent it from floating on the surface and irritating the skin). Stir well before soaking for 15-20 minutes. This is great for relieving fatigue (those with high blood pressure or pregnant women should exercise caution when taking high-temperature baths).
Recommended: Lavender + Bergamot for sleep, Ginger + Rosemary for dispelling cold.
Foot Soak: Add 3-5 drops of essential oil to warm water (around 40°C) for 10-15 minutes to relieve cold feet and relieve stress. IV. Topical Application (Precise dilution is required for specific issues)
For acne and insect bites: Tea tree essential oil has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Apply one drop directly to the acne or bite with a cotton swab (apply only a small amount and topically; avoid applying to large areas).
For muscle soreness: Mix rosemary and peppermint essential oils with a carrier oil (a 1:10 ratio). Apply to the sore area and gently massage to help soothe.
For hair care: Add one to two drops of rosemary or cedarwood essential oil to shampoo, lather, and then wash to improve the scalp environment (avoid contact with eyes).
V. Precautions
Dilution Guidelines: With the exception of a few essential oils (such as tea tree and lavender) that can be applied directly to small areas, all other essential oils must be diluted with a carrier oil, especially for sensitive skin, children, and pregnant women. Allergy Test: Before first use, apply diluted essential oil behind the ear or inside the wrist. Wait 24 hours for no redness, swelling, or itching before use.
Avoid Sensitive Areas: Do not apply essential oils directly to the eye area, mucous membranes (such as the nasal cavity and oral cavity), or wounds.
Photosensitive Essential Oils: Citrus essential oils (such as lemon, bergamot, and sweet orange) are photosensitizing. Avoid direct sunlight for 12 hours after use to prevent skin hyperpigmentation.
Special Populations: Pregnant women, breastfeeding women, those with epilepsy, and those with hypertension should consult a healthcare professional before use (some essential oils, such as rosemary and mint, may be irritating).
Storage: Store in a cool, dark, airtight container away from children and pets.
Choose the appropriate application method and combine essential oils to maximize their aromatherapy benefits.
