As spring arrives and nature awakens following a cold winter, it also marks the season when various microorganisms begin to multiply.
After a hard day's work, the most blissful moment for you is likely when you finally lie down in bed after a shower-temporarily free from all responsibilities-and settle in comfortably to sleep however you please!
However, you may not realize that the very moment you lie down each night, at least 10 million dust mites begin to swarm freely over your body, sharing your bed and pillow! That's right-dust mites! Ten million of them!
Even more alarming is their reproductive rate, which is ten times faster than that of mice! They produce a new generation every three days, effectively doubling their population. Moreover, they are ubiquitous-found everywhere from pillows and towels to carpets-and there are over 5,000 known species of dust mites.
Dust mites are microscopic; even the largest ones measure only 0.5 millimeters in length and are invisible to the naked eye. Possessing eight long legs, they move with surprising speed and are found in the highest concentrations within pillow cores and mattresses.
Dust mites are currently recognized as one of the most potent allergens in the world; a mere 30 grams of accumulated dust can harbor as many as 42,000 dust mites, with a single mite carrying over a dozen different types of allergens.
If dust mites are not eliminated promptly, they can burrow into your skin follicles, triggering various dermatological and respiratory conditions that pose serious health risks to the human body.
1. Mopping to Banish Dust Mites
Essential Oil Blend: 5 drops each of Eucalyptus, Tea Tree, and Rosemary essential oils.
Usage: Add the blend to your mop water when cleaning the floors (alternatively, add it to a 500ml spray bottle filled with water).
This method effectively prevents dust mites from breeding on your floors. You may also add salt to the water to leave the floors feeling fresher; in addition to deterring dust mites, this helps prevent the floors from becoming damp.
